Play with Comparisons
Keep comparing various day-to-day things to totally different things. As they get the hang of similes and analogies, they will begin using them in the poems that they write as well. For example the moon and the pizza. Let them play with the language. And this not only means the aforesaid analogies but also punctuation, grammar capitalization and even the spelling, at times.
Rhyming words come more easily. So, to start off with, encourage them to use rhyming words. Keep a journal handy to write down more rhyming words as they come to mind (for later). This of course does not mean that short poems for kids have to always rhyme. It is the thought and flow that’s more important. That, however, in no way undermines verse that follows a traditional structure. Art can be structured or otherwise and creativity comes more from the expression of feelings.
Free your Mind
Don’t burden them down when they writer poetry with the thought of composing a verse. Never force them Let them watch a butterfly by a window, go for a nature walk, paint, play with dough or even visit the green grocer. Allow them to capture their thoughts lazily. A little silence, a little freedom almost always results in wonderful ideas for poems for kids. The best poets are those who are masters of observation. So let them observe and give in to detailing.
Love the Mistakes
When they write poetry help them to realize that they will make mistakes. Make them accept and love that too. Creativity means a collection of good and the not so good. Having a false opinion about one self (be that thinking that ‘I’m very good’ or being over critical about oneself) will never lead to any learning. Help your kids to understand that the road to writing good poetry is to just keep writing – junk et all. It will sharpen their skills, teach them revision, accept feedback and grow in original thought.
Poetry for kids is something that should please the reader and make the writer glad. So help your child to find a voice that he can share with the world.
